Wolof Studies

Wolof is a west African language spoken primarily by ethnic Wolof people in Senegal, with groups of speakers also present in parts of Gambia and southwest Mauritania . The roots of this language date back to the medieval period and spread throughout the region under the Jolof Empire that encompassed much of the language’s modern day range.

Wolof is back at UF for the Fall 2025 semester, with a beginners course for those who are new to this historic language.
