Biography

Dr. Rose Sau Lugano is a Master lecturer at the University of Florida, where she currently teaches Swahili language and African Literature. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, and a minor in Women Studies from the Pennsylvania State University in State College. She is currently a faculty member of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (LLC), a position she has held since 2004. She has extensive teaching experience which begun in Kenya in 1981 at a high School, then to Kenyatta University after she got her MA. She has presented in several conferences and workshops as well as published articles on various issues on language pedagogy/documentation and African literature. Her research in literature is focused on issues of self-hood of the African girl child/woman in literary texts written in Swahili and English languages.

Areas of Interest

I joined the University of Florida in fall 2004. I teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced Swahili language and literature courses. My current research is centered around issues of identity formation in the African female Bildungsroman. I focus on texts written in both English and Swahili languages. My other interests include comparative literature, African literature and cultures, children's literature, women studies, and translation.
