Placement for Lower Division Courses

  • Students with no background in French begin in FRE 1130 (Beginning French 1)
  • Students with high school background in French (no AP/IB/AICE):

FRE 1130: Beginning French 1 (5 credits); FRE 1131: Beginning French 2 (5 credits)
FRE 1134: Accelerated French Review (5 credits); FRE 2220: Intermediate French I (4 credits)


  1. If a score is pending and students are unsure of what to predict, they should register for FRE 2220. As soon as the student receives the score, s/he should check the AP/IB/AICE chart in the Undergraduate Catalog online to see if FRE 2220 is the appropriate level.
  2. If a score is pending and students feel confident in predicting their score, they should register for the next step in the language sequence (found in the AP/IB/AICE section of the catalog). As soon as the student receives the score, s/he should check the AP/IB/AICE chart in the Undergraduate Catalog online to see the chosen course is at the appropriate level.
  3. If the score has been received, select course based on AP/IB/AICE chart in the catalog.

  • Students with other experience in French (those whose educational background is atypical, those who speak French at home, etc.) may determine placement via the WebCAPE placement exam: For more information on the WebCape exam or to take the test, please CLICK HERE.
  • Students who wish to demonstrate foreign language proficiency by examination may take a French foreign language proficiency exam at the following website: https://teachingcenter.ufl.edu/testing/flpe/ [Please note that UF does not grant course credit for a score on this exam; instead your foreign language requirement will be waived if your score meets the required level for your college.]
